Echoes of Stillness

Echoes of Stillness, explores the quiet beauty of Quaker meeting houses across the UK. This project was born from a desire to step away from an increasingly polemical world to reflect on a community who gather without sermons or ideologies and who seek to live by their values of simplicity, peace, equality and truth.

To reflect the one-hour silent worship, I used a large-format camera to make one hour exposures, curious to whether the film might absorb and portray some of the essence of each space. This process was an attempt to visually render the intangible experience of silent waiting and collective support, an effort to try and capture the profound sense of silence, peace, light, and space.

Quakers believe in accessing the Inner Light—a direct connection to the divine within each person. I was struck by a purposeful emptiness. Light is a central protagonist in this narrative. Streaming through large, unadorned windows it illuminates the spaces and becomes part of the worship itself. The silence, the stillness, invites the viewer to breathe and listen, revealing a fertile quietude where true peace can take root.

The meeting houses’ architecture is a study in equality and friendship. The benches are arranged in a circle, a powerful symbol of community where there is no pulpit or hierarchy. This democratic design mirrors the Quaker belief in the Inner Light present in everyone, fostering a deep sense of connection.  Echoes of Stillness is my visual meditation on these principles. It’s an invitation to find solace in the simple beauty of these spaces, reminding us that the most meaningful experiences are often found in the eloquent language of silence, light, and a peaceful, shared space.
